Golan: Between War and Peace

Synopsis

Since 1967, the Golan Heights have been the subject of constant tension between Israel and Syria. Today, they lie at the heart of peace negotiations between the two countries. This film delves into the human reality and everyday lives of several Golan inhabitants —Syrian Druze and Israelis, passive or active participants in a conflict for which they do not necessarily hold all the keys. A film made in the hope of peace which was, at the time, being negotiated between Syria and Israel.

Walking through the Arab or Druze villages of this plateau, occupied by Israel since 1967 and which Syria is eager to reclaim, the sense of dilemma facing its inhabitants is immediate. Written everywhere on the walls in Arabic are the words: “Long live Syria, we are Syrians.” Yet if you speak to a shopkeeper, he will point to the Mercedes parked in front of his store and say, “That won’t be possible anymore if we return to Syria.” Ilan Flammer’s documentary portrays the lives of these anonymous individuals, focusing on the human reality that lies beyond the political conflict
