Synopsis
Here in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. René Ngassam, a taxi driver from the Bamiléké region, lives in a house on the city’s outskirts. His mother, however, has remained in the village, deaf and mute, though she once spoke and heard. Has a curse been cast upon her? Is it an illness? A psychiatrist, Dr. Makang Ma Mbog, discusses her case and reflects on his practice. Yol Yol, his friend and traditional healer, speaks of his craft.

Histoire d’un sort is a striking example of the coexistence of two radically opposing practices, two different ways of perceiving the world, both of which are essential in a country where the boundaries between the rational and the irrational remain remarkably blurred. An essential insight for understanding this people, and one that this documentary succeeds in revealing.
